After many comments as to the deteriorating state of the aircraft on display at Slemon Park, a group of local aircraft enthusiasts got together with a view to solving the problem of preservation of the three "Gate Guardian" aircraft. The group called itself "Friends of Summerside Aircraft Preservation Project" (FSAPP)
The following is a list of those initially involved in the FSAPP Lowell Huestis Errol Laughlin (WW II RCAF) Senator Archie Johnstone (WW II RCAF) Bill Thompson (CEO Slemon Park Corp) Mike Everett Tom Capstick (RCAF/CAF Ret'd) Wayne Griffith (RCAF/CAF Ret'd) W. Anderson (Canadian Heritage Aircraft Society - Ch'town)
Our initial goal was to spruce up the Argus aircraft in particular which was showing a good deal of wear and tear. It was decided that for 2008, we would be content to spruce up the undercarriage, repair the radome & ECM dome, repaint the lightening stripe and roundel on the starboard side and repaint the propeller. These goals were accomplished. Our efforts gave us better insight into the full scope of the task to fully repaint the aircraft as well as the equipment required and the logistical challenges we will face.
In the next few months, the FSAPP will concentrate on forming a proper committee structure, detailing specific requirements for each aircraft, costing the project and identifying fund raising methods.
